Dating back for over 2000 years, Monmouth is a convenient centre for touring the nearby Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. The town itself retains its medieval layout to a large extent and contains many buildings of historic interest.

A feature of the history of Monmouth is its connection with many eminent names of the past: Geoffrey of Monmouth, the source of many of the legends of King Arthur. Henry the fifth, born in Monmouth Castle in 1387. Lord Nelson who made two visits to the town and surrounding area. Charles Rolls of Rolls-Royce fame who was also a pioneer aviator and became the first Briton to die in a powered aviation accident.
